Why Geneva

A sustainable destination for your conference

Geneva has long been committed to sustainability. A number of local initiatives, such as reducing waste and building eco-neighbourhoods, have been launched. The city is also committed to achieving the goals set by the United Nations and adopted right here in Geneva.

Geneva has been committed to sustainability for many years. The canton is the first in Switzerland to implement the Agenda 2030 policy at local level. The city is actively committed to achieving the sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations right here in Geneva.

There are many local initiatives, such as Genilac, an innovative solution that recovers lake water to regulate the temperature of buildings in the city. Geneva has created a number of eco-neighbourhoods to improve the quality of life of its residents. The Association for the Safeguard of Lake Geneva carries out various actions to preserve the quality of the lake's waters.

Geneva's proximity to numerous associations and organisations active in sustainable, social and environmental development makes it a fertile breeding ground for these initiatives, both locally and internationally. Geneva is also a major centre for green and sustainable finance.

A national commitment

In 2007, the Federal Council drew up the Energy strategy 2050, one of whose main objectives is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Switzerland tops the world rankings in environmental sustainability (WEF Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report, 2019). It also ranks in the top 10 of the latest Environmental Performance Index
