Why Geneva

Discover a unique hub of expertise

Ideally located at the heart of Europe, Geneva is an attractive destination for global companies and international associations. Renowned for its academic excellence, the city ranks among the world's most competitive and innovative in several key sectors.

The home of global companies and associations

At the crossroads of Europe, Geneva is an attractive destination for global companies, with its excellent infrastructure and international airport close to the city centre. More than 750 multinational companies have their European or world headquarters in Geneva, including P&G, Caterpillar, Richemont, Givaudan and KPMG.

A major hub for associations
Thanks to its multilateral tradition and multicultural vitality, Geneva is home to various international and European associations. Many of these are active in the medical and sustainable development fields, such as the World Heart Federation, the Union for International Cancer Control, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, the World Dental Federation, the International Aids Society and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Cutting-edge research and education

Geneva is renowned for its academic excellence. The University of Geneva, founded in 1559 by Jean Calvin, ranks among the world's top 100 universities (49th in the Shanghai ranking). This public and polyvalent institution counts nearly 20,000 students in nine faculties. Its academic expertise and cutting-edge research programmes are recognised in a variety of fields, including the exact sciences, medicine and social sciences.

The University cultivates strong links with international Geneva while contributing to the economic, cultural and social development of the region. It also works closely with the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), which train a large number of doctors and are the country's largest university hospital.

The Geneva Graduate Institute, founded in 1927, is Europe's oldest school devoted entirely to international relations. Its research and teaching programmes focus on international relations, global challenges, development issues and governance. Located on the Campus de la Paix, between the United Nations and the lake, the Institute maintains close links with international Geneva and its institutions. Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations, Micheline Calmy-Rey, former Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Philipp Hildebrand, former Director of the Swiss National Bank, all studied here.
