Known as the city of dialogue, Geneva is a leading centre for multilateral cooperation. It is home to the European headquarters of the United Nations, 39 international organisations, including the World Health Organisation and the World Trade Organisation, and over 400 NGOs. The presence of these institutions makes Geneva a recognised centre of competence in many fields.

In addition, 180 foreign states are represented at the UN in Geneva, either with a diplomatic mission or a permanent representation.

Geneva is also the birthplace of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the world's oldest humanitarian body.
