Biotechnologies

Geneva is a highly qualified centre of competence in biotechnology. Two major institutions embody the Swiss Health Valley.

The BioAlps association, founded in 2001, represents the life sciences cluster in Western Switzerland. It brings together research centres, academic institutions, start-ups and multinational companies in a diversified, world-class ecosystem. Its active network fosters synergies and cooperation in this field, which is at the cutting edge of innovation. This vitality benefits the biotech and medtech sectors, which have seen double-digit growth in recent years.

The other major institution is the renowned Campus Biotech, which specialises in neuroscience and neurotechnology, digital health and global health. Created in 2013, this centre of excellence brings together healthcare experts, researchers and investors in the quest for concrete, innovative solutions to global challenges. Among its flagship programmes, the Blue Brain Project aims to produce digital simulations and reconstructions of the mouse brain. The campus generates a myriad of opportunities, bringing impetus and investment to this vital economic and scientific sector.

This dynamism in the biotech industry has earned Geneva and its region top ranking as a centre for life sciences research in continental Europe, according to the journal Science.
