Our centres of expertise: sport

Geneva and its population are passionate about sport. Large-scale, highly popular events take place in the city every year, such as the Bol d'Or regatta, the Escalade running race and the International Horse Show Jumping.

A passion for sport

Geneva and its population are passionate about sport. Large-scale, highly popular events take place in the city every year. In June, the traditional Bol d'Or regatta, the world's largest inland lake regatta, brings together more than 500 boats and 3,500 sailors on the lake, starting in Geneva.

In December, the Escalade race welcomes elite and amateur runners from all over the world for a magnificent run through the old town. This sporting event and popular celebration regularly breaks participation records, with over 50,000 runners of all ages. Another major event is the Geneva International Horse Show Jumping. Created in 1926, this prestigious competition welcomes the best riders every year to the world's largest indoor arena. The Tour de Romandie (cycling), the Geneva Triathlon, the Geneva Marathon, the Swiss Open Geneva and the Gonet Geneva Open (tennis) are also on the list of sporting events not to be missed.

Home of global sport

Geneva's first-class infrastructure makes it possible to organise major competitions and welcome athletes in the best possible conditions. The city was in the spotlight when it hosted the Euro 2008 and will welcome the Women's Euro in 2025. It has a 30,000-seat stadium with 27 VIP lounges, and an ice rink that can accommodate more than 7,000 spectators. Plus, the Palexpo convention and exhibition centre hosts all kinds of events, including the International Horse Show Jumping, the Laver Cup and the Davis Cup (tennis).

The city is also home to sports federations and associations, including FIA, the world governing body for motor sport, and the International Basketball Federation. Interestingly, Geneva is also the birthplace of Tchoukball, a team sport combining volleyball, handball, and pelota.

Renowned athletes and teams

Geneva-based clubs shine at national and international level, including the Geneva Servette Hockey Club, Swiss champions in 2023, and the Servette Football Club, one of the country's top teams and a participant in various European Cups. The Servette FC Chênois women's team has dominated the national scene in recent years, winning the Swiss championship in 2021 and the Swiss Cup in 2023. The Geneva Lions, meanwhile, have an impressive track record, with two LNA Swiss Championship titles and several Swiss Basketball League Cup and Swiss Cup victories to their name.

Geneva's individual sports scene is no exception, with leading figures in several disciplines, such as long-distance runner Tadesse Abraham, swimmer Jérémy Desplanches and freestyle skier Sarah Höfflin.

The city is also a fertile breeding ground for sailing sports and boasts some big names in the discipline. Local sailors and skippers Bernard Stamm, Dominique Wavre, and more recently Justine Mettraux and Alan Roura, have all shone in the most prestigious events. Geneva is also home to the famous Alinghi team, founded by Ernesto Bertarelli and two-time winner of the America's Cup.

An open-air playground

Geneva's idyllic setting between lake and mountains provides the ideal playground for all sports enthusiasts. No matter the season, there's a wide range of outdoor activities to choose from: the lake and rivers, the countryside, and surrounding mountains are all great ways to get away from it all and keep fit while still in the city. Nature is everywhere, providing a unique setting for nurturing both the body and mind. Geneva's proximity to the Alps means that you can take a trip to Mont Blanc and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the lake, all that in the same day!

Geneva has also made social integration through sport a priority. It promotes sport and well-being, particularly among the younger generation, women, and migrants.
